PLJCS Marks Library Card Sign-Up Month In September

SMITHFIELD, N.C. –– The Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield is joining libraries across the country in recognizing Library Card Sign-Up Month throughout September.

The annual campaign, organized by the American Library Association, has been held each September since 1987 to encourage students and families to take advantage of library services as the school year begins.

This year’s theme is “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes.”

While a library card is not required to attend PLJCS programs or classes, cardholders have free access to a variety of materials and services.

Those include books, DVDs, audiobooks, Wonderbooks, e-books and digital audiobooks through the Libby app.

Cardholders also have access to NC LIVE resources, including research databases, language-learning programs, career development tools and genealogy resources.

The library also lends technology such as mobile hotspots and e-readers, along with items available through its “Library of Things,” including nature-themed backpacks, pickleball sets and book club kits.

PLJCS participates in NC Cardinal, a statewide library catalog that allows patrons to request materials from participating libraries across North Carolina and have them delivered to their local library.

Residents can obtain a library card by visiting the library with a photo ID and proof of their current address. Cards can be used at Johnston County affiliated libraries and throughout the NC Cardinal network.

Residents interested only in digital resources may apply online for a virtual library card, providing access to services including Libby, NC Kids Digital, NC Kids Level Up and NC LIVE.

The Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield is located at 305 E. Market Street in Downtown Smithfield.
