SSS Students Excel In JCPS Poetry Contests

Courtney Lassiter and Priscilla (Ruthie) Nutt represented Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS) with excellence at the virtual 2022 Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) Poetry contests. Competitors were featured and winners were announced during a Zoom meeting held on Thursday, January 20th.

Courtney Lassiter was named County Champion and Ruthie Nutt was named First Runner-Up in the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest. Courtney will go on to represent JCPS at the state’s virtual Poetry Out Loud Contest at the end of February. 

In the county-wide original poetry contest, Ruthie Nutt was named Champion, and Courtney Lassiter was named First Runner-Up. Both students will represent SSS and JCPS at the Poetry Ourselves state festival and workshop, which will be held in conjunction with the state Poetry Out Loud contest, in late February. 

Courtney, a junior at SSS, is an aspiring artist, poet, and novelist who strives to make her living as a professional artist in the future.

Ruthie is also a junior at SSS, and she aspires to become a writer of children’s books in the future.
