Selma Police Arrest Shooting Suspect

SELMA – Selma police detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting. Stepvon Dee Batts was shot once in the upper arm while inside a home at 713 Wood Street, around 6:20pm August 13. The 33 year-old victim was transported by Johnston County EMS to WakeMed for treatment.

Police allege Kray-Juan Demeterius Davis, age 24, of Graves Street, Selma shot Batts during a verbal altercation that quickly escalated. Davis was located minutes after the shooting, standing outside his car, at the intersection of E. Lizzie Street and Tower Road.

Davis was transported to Johnston Health in Smithfield for evaluation. He was later charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Davis was held on a $50,000 secured bond at the Johnston County Detention Center.

Police said someone at the Wood Street home attempted to clean up the victim’s blood and crime scene before they arrived.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing altercation between the Davis and Batts, reportedly over a woman.
