Smithfield-Selma Senior Selected For Elite Morehead-Cain Scholarship Program

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A Johnston County student has been selected as part of the Morehead-Cain Foundation’s Class of 2030 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, joining a competitive national cohort of 69 scholars.
Anya Sabina Muminovic, a senior at Smithfield-Selma Senior High School, is among students chosen from 33 North Carolina counties, 15 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and seven countries.
Muminovic has been active in academics, athletics, and student leadership throughout high school. She serves as president of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, vice president of her senior class, and is a member of the Unified Club. She is also captain of the varsity swim team and helped lead Smithfield-Selma to its first state championship in women’s swimming, winning the 100-yard breaststroke title.
Outside the pool, Muminovic earned the Girl Scout Gold Award after creating a free swim-lesson program for elementary school students in feeder schools.
She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, where she intends to study pharmacy and chemistry while competing on the women’s rowing team.
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship provides full financial support for undergraduate study at UNC, including tuition, room and board, and books. Scholars also receive funding for four summers of experiential learning opportunities, including internships, research, and global travel.
The program selects students based on leadership, academic achievement, character, and service. Scholars join a network of more than 3,500 alumni worldwide.
Anya is the daughter of Sarah and Dejan Muminovic of Clayton.
